LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Long
Island Arboricultural Association's Arbor Day project on March 21, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 25th Anniversary of the Long Island Arboricultural Associ-
ation's Arbor Day project to be celebrated on Saturday, March 21, 2015,
at Belmont Lake State Park, North Babylon, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Long Island Arboricultural Association (LIAA) was founded
in 1958 by a small group of professional arborists with a goal of
promoting better education for the appreciation and care of shade trees
and shrubs on Long Island; its membership has since expanded to include
students, educators, municipal workers, and other concerned individuals;
and
WHEREAS, Today, this pioneering non-profit organization strives to
reach out to its community by teaching proper planting and preservation,
encouraging research for the adequate protection of trees and shrubs,
and promoting the use of efficient and proper arboricultural methods;
and
WHEREAS, In celebration of Arbor Day, each year the LIAA selects a
County or State Park for a day of beautification and enhancement, which
includes pruning, removal of debris, root fertilization, and the plant-
ing of new trees; and
WHEREAS, In 1990, LIAA held its inaugural Arbor Day project at the
historic Belmont Park Pines in the median of the Southern State Parkway
near Belmont Lake State Park, beginning an outstanding tradition of
ecological service; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the 25th Anniversary of its Arbor Day
projects, the LIAA will be returning to the historic Belmont Park Pines,
its original Arbor Day site, with a focus on the pruning and elevation
of the historic pine trees along the Southern State Parkway; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those associ-
ations which enhance the well-being and vitality of the community and
have shown a long and sustained commitment to the environment certainly
have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Long Island Arboricultural Asso-
ciation's Arbor Day project; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Long Island Arboricultural Association.
