LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Grand Island Relay For Life upon
the occasion of its Annual Kickoff Ceremony on May 30-31, 2015, and
paying tribute to this year's honorary survivor Luke Gworek

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Grand Island Relay For Life upon the occasion of its Annual Kickoff
Ceremony on May 30-31, 2015, in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of
Relay for Life; and
WHEREAS, This year the Grand Island Relay For Life will be paying
special tribute to the 2015 honorary survivor Luke Gworek; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Grand Island Relay For Life brings together
the entire community to take part in the fight against cancer, and to
raise awareness and funds for fighting leukemia; the 2015 theme is "One
World. One Hope...Imagine Our World with a Cure," a time of cele-
bration, remembrance and hope; and
WHEREAS, Relay For Life can be a life-changing experience, an event
which each year, nationally, brings together more than 3.5 million
people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember
loved ones lost, and empower individuals and communities to fight back
against a disease which takes too much from too many; and
WHEREAS, The 2015 honorary survivor 8-year-old Luke Gworek, the son of
Danielle Gworek, was diagnosed with leukemia just over one year ago;
since then, he has overcome many serious adversities, and credits the
support from his family, friends, and community, as well as the doctors
who dedicate their careers to research and helping children; and
WHEREAS, Relay For Life was established in 1985, and this year will
celebrate 30 years strong; now in its 13th year, the Grand Island Relay
for Life is hoping to break the $1.5 million for funds raised in its
lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Much more than a walk around a track, Relay For Life is a
community-affirming event; it is a time to remember those lost to
cancer, an occasion for people to comfort and console one another, and a
night to celebrate those who have survived; and
WHEREAS, Participation in the Relay For Life, in addition, gives indi-
viduals and organizations the power to help accelerate the advancement
toward a future where cancer does not take the lives of friends and
family; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when people and
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize and commend the Grand Island Relay For Life upon the occasion
of its Annual Kickoff Ceremony on May 30-31, 2015, and paying tribute to
this year's honorary survivor Luke Gworek; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Grand Island Relay For Life, and Luke Gworek.
