LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Deepa Manwani upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the
Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly commend
those outstanding individuals within the State of New York whose life-
long dedication to medical research results in groundbreaking discover-
ies which improve the lives of those affected by the world's most devas-
tating diseases; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Deepa Manwani upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Distinguished Service Award by the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients
Network to be celebrated at its 22nd Annual Woman of the Year Dinner
Dance Benefit on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at the Grand Prospect Hall,
Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Since 1993, the Sickle Cell Thalassemia Patients Network
(SCTPN) has recognized medical professionals and individuals who have
dedicated themselves to improving the quality of life for people living
with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Deepa Manwani completed her residency at North Shore
University Hospital, Cornell University Medical College in 1996, and
received her sub-specialty training in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at
Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to helping those with Sickle Cell Disease,
Dr. Deepa Manwani's early research efforts at Mt. Sinai focused prima-
rily on exploring mechanisms of fetal hemoglobin reactivation with the
ultimate goal of designing novel therapies for patients with Sickle Cell
Disease and Thalassemia; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, this esteemed physician became Director of the
Thalassemia Program, and later, Sickle Cell Program at Schneider Chil-
dren's Hospital in New York, where she served until 2008; and
WHEREAS, Presently, Dr. Deepa Manwani is the Director of the Sickle
Cell Disease Program, Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and Asso-
ciate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of
Medicine; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure, Dr. Deepa Manwani has led quality improve-
ment efforts at CHAM which have led to significant reductions in read-
mission rates and length of stay for patients with Sickle Cell Disease;
and
WHEREAS, A tireless researcher, Dr. Deepa Manwani has also partic-
ipated in numerous NIH studies examining the modifiers of fetal hemoglo-
bin expression; she is currently involved in studies aimed at increased
adherence to hydroxyurea and improved transition to adult care; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Dr. Deepa Manwani, who have given so
selflessly of their skills and dedication in performing vital medical
research to bring us closer to eradicating deadly diseases, are worthy
and due the highest commendation for their contributions to all of
humanity; and
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed individuals within the medical
community for their extraordinary and sustained contributions to the
progress of medicine and the improvement of life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Deepa Manwani upon the occasion of her designation as recipi-
ent of the Distinguished Service Award by the Sickle Cell Thalassemia
Patients Network; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Deepa Manwani.
