LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 205th Anniversary of the GOSHEN
INDEPENDENT

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 205th Anniversary of the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT; and
WHEREAS, Newspapers are often referred to as the first draft of histo-
ry, providing a record of a community; and
WHEREAS, Based in Goshen, New York, the seat of government for Orange
County, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has recorded Goshen's triumphs and trage-
dies for more than two centuries; and
WHEREAS, Since 1812, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has recorded both the
births and deaths of its residents; this invaluable news source has also
reported the academic, artistic and athletic achievements of Goshen's
school children; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has provided a
platform for government, religious institutions and organizations to
tell of their activities; in addition, the paper has reported the
valiant efforts of police, fire and ambulance crews to safeguard the
community; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has served the Goshen busi-
ness community by providing a place for advertising and business
stories, and the means to report on upcoming holidays, parades and
festive activities; and
WHEREAS, Through its reporters and editors, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has
provided a voice for its readers, and a forum for the residents of Gosh-
en to express their thoughts through letters to the editor; and
WHEREAS, The GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has proudly helped improve the quality
of life for the residents of Goshen by informing them of the community's
news and activities by sharing articles and photographs; and
WHEREAS, For many years, the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT has been under the
luminous direction of its Editor, Tom Leek; maintaining a high quality
and relevant paper, he continues to deliver a superior product to all of
its readers, and serves as an expressive voice to the people of Goshen
by providing a platform for all members of its community; and
WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a tremendous service to citizens
across the State of New York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State and Nation is strengthened by a
responsible citizenry which is actively engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and
WHEREAS, As the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT moves into the future, it carries
with it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and an
outstanding record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 205th Anniversary of the GOSHEN INDEPENDENT; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Tom Leek, Editor, GOSHEN INDEPENDENT.
