LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring student-athlete Kelsey Minato upon the
occasion of being named the 2016 Division I Player of the Year by the
Metropolitan Writers Basketball Association

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
young individuals within our midst, who strive for athletic and academic
excellence through rigorous training and mental and physical discipline;
and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success, and developing a sense
of fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
student-athlete Kelsey Minato upon the occasion of being named the 2016
Division I Player of the Year by the Metropolitan Writers Basketball
Association; and
WHEREAS, Kelsey Minato, a senior at the United States Military Acade-
my, has received this prestigious award in recognition of her excep-
tional athletic performance, as well as for her exemplary character
demonstrated both on and off the court; and
WHEREAS, A gifted scorer and talented young athlete, Kelsey Minato
established a new West Point Academy and Patriot League career scoring
record of 2,556 points, and was ranked seventh in the Nation at 23.2
points per game; she also owns all-time West Point career marks for
3-pointers (329), free throws (569) and field goals (829); and
WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed athlete has helped lead her Army
Black Knights Basketball Team to an impressive record of 29 wins with
just three losses, a 17-0 record at home, and three Patriot League tour-
nament wins by an average of 25 points, as well as an NCAA tournament
berth; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Kelsey Minato
has earned All-American honors and was a first-team All-Metropolitan
pick the past three seasons and second-team as a freshman; she has also
won the Patriot League MVP award three times; and
WHEREAS, Kelsey Minato's overall basketball career has been outstand-
ing, and she was loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans,
friends and the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Kelsey Minato has clearly made a contribution to the
spirit of excellence which is a tradition of her school; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kelsey Minato upon the occasion of being named the 2016 Division I
Player of the Year by the Metropolitan Writers Basketball Association;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kelsey Minato.
