LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Genoa
Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commemorate the 100th Anni-
versary of the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., and to honor its
past and present firefighting members for 100 years of fire protection
to the citizens of Genoa, New York and its surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
to be celebrated at its Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Friday,
July 17th, 2016 at Meyers Park in Lansing, New York; and
WHEREAS, Fire departments are an integral part of community protection
services in every locality of our State; during the past 100 years, the
courageous and devoted firefighters of the Genoa Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment, Inc. have valiantly responded to all types of fire emergencies and
have won the praise and respect of the community which they serve; and
WHEREAS, In 1910, three years after the "Big Fire" in Genoa which
damaged many buildings and businesses were lost, the Genoa Volunteer
Fire Department, Inc. purchased its first piece of apparatus from Ameri-
can LaFrance, the Champion No. 10, which had one cylinder with a water
capacity of 45 gallons; and
WHEREAS, In 1913, a new, 700 pound bell was installed on the original
engine house of the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. which is now a
museum owned and run by Peter Signor; the bell was removed some time
later because of a crack which was created when the bell was rung so
hard and so long for a barn fire that it cracked; and
WHEREAS, A chemical tank affixed to a 1934 Ford chassis was used
alongside a 1946 International that carried a John Bean High Pressure
fog system; these two units were housed in the fire station on Main
Street with double doors opening up to the street; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the Fire Association was incorporated, becoming the
Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.; land was purchased and a new
house was built in 1950; and
WHEREAS, For over a century the men and women of the Genoa Volunteer
Fire Department, Inc., have provided valuable service to the community
of Genoa by responding to emergencies involving structure fires, motor
vehicle accidents and residential medical calls; and
WHEREAS, One hundred years after formation, members of the Genoa
Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. continue to serve their district as
Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and First Responders by
making house calls since 1915; and
WHEREAS, With a membership of dedicated firefighters, the record of
the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department in public service and fire
protection is one to be envied; for 24 hours a day, for 365 days a year,
for 100 years, whenever the alarm sounded, these noble volunteers left
their homes and went to the aid of their neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Today, under the luminous leadership of Chief, Brian Howe;
Deputy Chief, Matt Rejman; Assistant Chief, Bob White; 2nd Assistant
Chief, Brad MacArthur; Fire Captain, Mark Connor; Fire Lieutenant, John
Connor; Rescue Captain, Joe Doeing; Rescue Lieutenant, Jim Malseed;
President, Matt Rejman; Vice President, Bob White; Secretary, Lorin
Correl; and Treasurer, Doug Radcliffe, the brave firefighters of the
Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. are prepared to risk their lives
every day to help save the lives of others and to protect homes and
property from the destruction caused by fire; and

WHEREAS, In addition to the skill and devoted service demonstrated by
individual firefighters, the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
reflects the history and development of firefighting over the past 100
years; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body cannot express sufficient gratitude to
those devoted individuals who recognize that the preservation of life
and property is a sacred responsibility and who make that responsibility
their own by serving as firefighters; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that we should give
special recognition to those who work so assiduously for the betterment
of their communities, and acknowledge publicly the heroic good works
performed by the volunteer fire departments of this great Empire State,
their officers and auxiliaries; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
proudly commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Genoa Volunteer Fire
Department, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Brian Howe, Chief, Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
