LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Vestal
Parkway on July 2, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor the proud and distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 75th Anniversary of the Vestal Parkway to be celebrated on
Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Four Corners Memorial Park in Vestal, New
York; and
WHEREAS, In 1939, the New York State Department of Transportation
began surveying and purchasing land for the construction of a new park-
way to be constructed between the Binghamton City Line and Vestal's Four
Corners; and
WHEREAS, The first two lanes of Vestal Parkway East were officially
opened to traffic on July 1, 1941, and construction began to complete
all four lanes of the Vestal Parkway West following World War II; and
WHEREAS, In 1949, Vestal Parkway West opened in order to alleviate
traffic on Front Street between the Four Corners and the Tioga County
line; two years later, the second two lanes of Vestal Parkway East and
the Binghamton extension along the river were both completed; and
WHEREAS, Since opening, the Vestal Parkway has become a vital part of
the community, with corporate headquarters, light industry, and retail
businesses relocating to what has become known as Vestal's Main Street;
and
WHEREAS, Today, this important roadway continues to serve the needs of
the diverse residents of the Broome County community by providing an
essential transportation link and a vital center of economic activity;
and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Vestal Parkway stands as testament to the spirit of
development and commerce which is the hallmark of the citizens of the
great of State of New York; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Vestal Parkway's enduring contributions
to the Empire State, this Legislative Body is proud to pay tribute upon
the occasion of its 75th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Vestal Parkway on July 2, 2016;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Vestal.
