LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP upon
the occasion of hosting its 50th Annual Medgar Evers Dinner on June 12,
2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP upon the occasion of hosting its 50th
Annual Medgar Evers Dinner on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at the Buffalo
Niagara Convention Center, Buffalo, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Buffalo Branch of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a social advocacy institution
organized locally in 1915 by social justice advocates such as Mary B.
Talbert and Reverend Dr. J. Edward Nash; the formation of this National
organization began in Buffalo, New York, during the Niagara Movement
Conference organized by W.E.B. DuBois in 1905; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Buffalo Branch of the
NAACP continues to improve the political, educational, social and
economic status of minority groups; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization's goal is to eliminate racial preju-
dice; to keep the public aware of the adverse effects of racial discrim-
ination; and to take lawful action to secure its elimination, consistent
with the efforts of the national organization and in conformity with the
Articles of Incorporation of the Association, its Constitution and
By-Laws, and as directed by the National Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, The Buffalo Branch of the NAACP focuses on disparities in
education, health, public safety, economic sustainability and in the
political process; its current advocacy work involves opposition to
proposed changes to the Buffalo School Board, opposition to charter
schools receiving public funding, AIDS and diabetes education, fair
treatment in the Criminal Court system, participation in the Black Lead-
ership Forum, and participation in the annual Straight Talk Small Busi-
ness Forum; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished history, the Buffalo Branch of the
NAACP has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and communi-
ties which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeav-
ors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Buffalo Branch of
the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP upon the occasion of hosting its
50th Annual Medgar Evers Dinner on June 12, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP.
