LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 225th Anniversary of the Town
of Clarkstown, Rockland County

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Clarkstown, in the County of
Rockland, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Clarkstown is celebrating its 225th Anniversary
with events and festivities throughout the year which include bringing
awareness to the importance of the history of the Town, focusing on
economic development as well as building up tourism; and
WHEREAS, The Clarkstown Town Board has declared October of 2016 as
Town of Clarkstown History Month and has called upon all the people of
Clarkstown to observe October by learning and appreciating the history
of the Town through appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities; and
WHEREAS, As part of the 225th commemoration, the Town of Clarkstown
will be creating a timeline which will be displayed in cases built in
the lobby of Town Hall; the display cases will also be filled with
historically themed artifacts and early documents as well as photo-
graphs, books and paintings of former town officials; and
WHEREAS, In addition, restoration of the Vanderbilt-Budke House, built
in 1739 and the second oldest house in Rockland County, is underway and
will tell a story as part of the history of the Town of Clarkstown; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Clarkstown was founded on March 18, 1791; previ-
ously it was part of Orange County, but was granted its independence by
means of an Act of the New York State Legislature; and
WHEREAS, With good fortune and a vast and rich history, the Town of
Clarkstown will continue to march forward as a safe and enjoyable commu-
nity to call home; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Clarkstown continues its commitment to enhancing
the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive environment for
residents and businesses as well as supporting and advocating on behalf
of its rich agricultural history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Clarkstown, recognizing
the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the 225th Anniversary Committee, as well as to leaders of the
Town of Clarkstown.
