LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the Bicentennial Anniversary of the
Great Neck School District

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of this noble Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Great Neck School District;
and
WHEREAS, The Great Neck School District was created in 1814, two years
after New York passed a law that mandated a state-wide public schools
system; and
WHEREAS, Located on the Arrandale property, Great Neck High School
opened its doors for the first time in 1914; four years later, its popu-
lation surpassed 4,500, entitling it to hire its first Superintendent
Elise M. Gignoux; and
WHEREAS, By 1929, Great Neck High School had relocated to its current
home on Polo Road; soon thereafter, the Lakeville School was built,
followed by numerous other school buildings over the next decade; and
WHEREAS, Great Neck School District student enrollment peaked in the
mid-1960s, therefore, the school board converted its schools into two
adult education centers, and two middle schools serving grades six
through eight, as well as two high schools educating grades nine through
twelve; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the 20th Century, hundreds of thousands of
students have graduated from Great Neck Schools with an outstanding
education; many alumni have gone on to become community leaders and
respected professionals in their chosen field; and
WHEREAS, The steadfast and unyielding commitment of parents, educators
and administrators to provide the highest quality education for students
has become the hallmark and tradition of the Great Neck School District;
and
WHEREAS, Within the 21st Century, the Great Neck School District
stands prepared to reach out, in earnest and enthusiastic quest of its
mission, to promote the maximum growth of every student, establishing
standards and building skills which will carry its students and the
citizens of its community into the future; and
WHEREAS, The Great Neck School District is proudly aware of its
distinguished past, eager to fulfill its present commitment to parents,
students and the community, and planning with vision and purpose for the
ebb and swell of growth and change it will encounter in the years to
come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Great Neck School
District; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Great Neck School District.
