LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Thomas E. Murray, Jr. upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the 2015 Theodore Roosevelt Award by
the Board of Trustees of Eastern Long Island Hospital

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Thomas E.
Murray, Jr. upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2015 Theodore Roosevelt Award by the Board of Trustees of Eastern Long
Island Hospital, to be celebrated at a special dinner on Saturday, May
30, 2015, at the Community Center in Peconic Landing, Greenport, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Theodore Roosevelt Award was established by the Nassau-
Suffolk Hospital Council in 1958; this auspicious award, inspired by the
26th President of the United States, recognizes individuals for their
outstanding voluntary contributions at community hospitals throughout
Long Island; and
WHEREAS, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. is certainly deserving of this esteemed
recognition; his perseverance, energy and financial expertise has helped
Eastern Long Island Hospital continue to fulfill its mission of provid-
ing essential healthcare services to the communities of both North Fork
and Shelter Island and critical access to specialized services; and
WHEREAS, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. began serving as a member of the East-
ern Long Island Hospital Board of Trustees in 1999; four years later, he
accepted the role of Chairman of the Board; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. has been active-
ly involved in rebuilding the hospital from the inside out; hospital-
wide projects have included the reconstruction of the emergency depart-
ment, the addition of acute beds in both psychiatry and addiction
services departments, the expansion of the imaging department to accom-
modate the acquisition of a state-of-the-art MRI and digital mammography
system, as well as a new Ambulatory Care Pavilion and a complete reno-
vation and recapitalization of the laboratory; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. led the Board of Trustees
through the process of setting up a supporting foundation (503(9)) for
the Eastern Long Island Hospital; he also helped to establish the East
End Health Alliance with Eastern Long Island Hospital and two East End
Hospitals, Peconic Bay Medical Center and Southampton Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Today, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. continues to hold the position
of Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and is a vital member of the Board
of the Foundation; since 2008, he has participated on the parent Board
of the East End Health Alliance, and presently, holds the title of
Second Vice Chair; and
WHEREAS, Formerly, President/CEO of Hamilton Federal Savings and Loan,
Bay Ridge, New York, Thomas E. Murray, Jr. has spent over 30 years in
the banking industry before retiring in 1992; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife, Ursula, who feels
privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achievements;
and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Thomas E. Murray, Jr. has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Thomas E. Murray, Jr. upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the 2015 Theodore Roosevelt Award by the Board of Trustees
of Eastern Long Island Hospital; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Thomas E. Murray, Jr.
