LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of former New York State lieu-
tenant governor Alfred DelBello, renowned public servant, distinguished
citizen, and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to mourn publicly the
death of certain prominent individuals whose valued contributions to
their community served to enhance the quality of life in the State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Alfred DelBello, who rose from the Yonkers City Council to
become the city's Mayor, Westchester's first Democratic County Executive
and New York's Lieutenant Governor, died on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the
age of 80; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 3, 1934 in Yonkers, Alfred DelBello gradu-
ated from Halsted School and, in 1956, from Manhattan College, with
majors in economics and political science; he received his law degree
from Fordham University Law School and entered private practice after a
brief tour with the National Guard; and
WHEREAS, Mayor of Yonkers in the early 1970s, Alfred DelBello was
elected three times as County Executive before becoming Lieutenant
Governor in 1982; he resigned from that post in 1985 to practice law in
the private sector, becoming a partner in the law firm DelBello Donnel-
lan Weingarten Wise & Wiederkehr LLP in White Plains; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of his long and storied careers in both the
public and private sectors, Alfred DelBello demonstrated an enduring
commitment to bettering the lives of others; this state is truly in a
better place today because of his service; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Alfred DelBello, who was well respected by
all parties, established a countywide bus system and the Westchester
County Medical Center replaced the old Grasslands Hospital; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he negotiated a contract with Signal Environ-
mental Systems to build a garbage-to-energy plant in Peekskill, and
several secondary treatment plants; and
WHEREAS, Alfred DelBello also worked with minority representatives for
increased social and health-related services; he dealt with such policy
areas as combatting youth suicide and he created the first Office for
the Disabled as well as the first Office for Women in the state; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, during this time, Alfred DelBello was instru-
mental in building the county's only boat launching ramp on Long Island
Sound at Glen Island Park and bicycle paths were constructed along the
Bronx River Parkway; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Lewisboro, Alfred DelBello was sincerely loved
and greatly respected by all those with whom he worked; committed to his
community, the people he represented, his State, and his Nation, he
served his public with dignity, dedication and incisive wisdom; and
WHEREAS, Alfred DelBello is survived by his loving wife of 56 years,
Dee; their son, Damon; three grandchildren; and a sister, Ann; and
WHEREAS, Over a long and meritorious life of service on behalf of
others, Alfred DelBello was a man of action, of integrity, and of
commitment, whose true compassion was generously given to all who knew
him; and
WHEREAS, Alfred DelBello leaves behind a tremendous legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of former New York State lieutenant governor Alfred
DelBello, renowned public servant, distinguished citizen, and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Alfred DelBello.
