LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Walter Gable upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award by the
Seneca County Chamber of Commerce
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Walter Gable has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Walter Gable
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2014 Lifetime
Achievement Award by the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, to be cele-
brated at its Annual Dinner Meeting on Friday, January 23, 2015, at
Ventosa Vineyards, Geneva, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 16, 1946, to the late Irving James and Elma
Sarah Gable in Seneca Falls, New York, Walter Gable graduated from Romu-
lus Central School in 1964; he graduated Cum Laude from Syracuse Univer-
sity with a Bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he received a Master's degree from Syracuse
University in 1972, and took additional course work at Bard College, St.
Cloud Minnesota State College, Eisenhower College, SUNY Albany, Franklin
& Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, and Colonial Williamsburg Institute for
Educators; and
WHEREAS, Walter Gable began his illustrious career in education as a
Social Studies Teacher at Clarence Central School in 1968; just two
years later, he earned a position as a Social Studies Teacher at Seneca
Falls Central School, a title he held for three decades, including
several years as a department chairperson; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Walter Gable began working as both an Adjunct
Instructor and Supervisor of Student Teachers for Hobart and William
Smith Colleges, as well as a contract Social Studies Consultant with the
Office of Assessment in the New York State Department of Education; and
WHEREAS, Today, Walter Gable serves as a Seneca County Historian; in
this capacity he has presented more than 40 programs to various schools
and community groups in 2014 alone, and currently writes articles for
the REVEILLE/BETWEEN THE LAKES, the FINGER LAKES TIMES, and TRI-VILLAGE
ADVANTAGE PENNYSAVER; and
WHEREAS, In addition, in 2012, he wrote THE SENECA ARMY DEPOT: FIGHT-
ING WARS FROM THE NEW YORK HOME FRONT, followed by SENECA COUNTY AND THE
CIVIL WAR,in 2014; and
WHEREAS, Walter Gable has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A valued and involved member of his community, Walter Gable
has served as the President of the New York State Council for Social
Studies, and is a current member of the Finger Lakes Antiques Club, the
choir of the Seneca Falls United Methodist Church, the Seneca Singers
vocal group, as well as member and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of
the Seneca Falls Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, A life member of the Historical Societies of Lodi, Ovid, and
Interlaken, Walter Gable is also a member and Secretary of the Board of
Trustees of the Empire State Theatre and Musical Instrument Museum; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Walter Gable has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Walter Gable is the proud recipient of countless awards and
accolades some of which include, the Mary Carden Special Service Award
from the National Education Association of New York, the New York State
Distinguished Social Studies Educator Award from the New York State
Council for Social Studies, and the Community Service Award from the
Seneca Falls Convention Days Planning Committee; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Walter Gable has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, Walter Gable has clearly had an enduring impact on the youth
of Seneca Falls, as well as on the community-at-large, and accordingly
merits recognition and applause for his impressive dedication to others;
and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Walter Gable upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Seneca County Chamber of
Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Walter Gable.
