LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc. upon
the occasion of officially renaming an Eastern Adirondack high peak
"Grace Peak" in memory of naturalist Grace Leach Hudowalski
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the continuing
welfare of the citizens of this great State and Nation is greatly
enriched by the purposeful endeavors of individuals and organizations
committed to the preservation of our environment, and to the enhancement
of appreciation for the distinctive features of our natural
surroundings; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Adiron-
dack Forty-Sixers, Inc. upon the occasion of officially re-naming an
Eastern Adirondack High Peak "Grace Peak" in memory of Grace Leach
Hudowalski to be feted at a dedication celebration honoring her legacy
on Saturday, June 20, 2015; and
WHEREAS, On June 12, 2014, the United States Board on Geographic Names
approved the petition of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc., under the
able leadership of President Sally Hoy, to rename the peak, marking the
culmination of a 12-year effort to bring the entire Adirondack community
together to recognize one of New York State's great and selfless wild-
ness advocates, Grace Leach Hudowalski; and
WHEREAS, Grace Leach Hudowalski became the second woman, and one of
only a few of North Country natives upon whom this high honor has been
bestowed by the people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, A North Country native, Grace Leach Hudowalski served this
great Empire State with distinction for more than 12 years throughout
the 1950s, as a Travel Supervisor for the former New York State Commerce
Department; and
WHEREAS, A life-long adventurer, and the first woman to ascend all 46
of the Adirondack High Peaks, Grace Leach Hudowalski dedicated both her
professional and personal life to promoting New York State history,
tourism, economic development and wilderness adventure within her
beloved Adirondack Mountains; and
WHEREAS, Grace Leach Hudowalski's enthusiasm for New York State and
the Adirondack Mountains was contagious; this remarkable woman worked
tirelessly throughout her life to build positive and collaborative
relationships within and between the numerous communities which shared
her love for the Adirondack wilderness and culture; and
WHEREAS, On Saturday, June 20, 2015, members of the Forty-Sixers,
residents of the towns of both Schroon and North Hudson, and various
organizations and special interest groups, as well as wilderness lovers
from around the State who supported the petition, will gather to cele-
brate Grace Leach Hudowalski's life and legacy and to continue to build
upon the relationships forged through the effort to secure this lofty
honor for a worthy North Country Coalition builder; and
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon every citizen to recognize that we are
all stewards of our environment and to applaud the efforts of individ-
uals such as Grace Leach Hudowalski who work tirelessly to protect the
environment and natural surroundings for the benefit of present and
future generations; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Grace Leach Hudowalski displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc. upon the occasion of official-
ly renaming an Eastern Adirondack High Peak "Grace Peak" in memory of
naturalist Grace Leach Hudowalski; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sally Hoy, President, Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc., and the
family of Grace Leach Hudowalski.
