LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Congress to restore funding to the
202 senior housing program operated by the Department of Housing and
Urban Development

WHEREAS, The Section 202 Housing program has been developing affordable
senior housing across the country since 1959; and
WHEREAS, Before the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
was created in 1965, this visionary tool recognized the need to finance
decent housing so that seniors could age with dignity, and it has been a
resounding success; and
WHEREAS, In New York City alone, the 202 program has created an esti-
mated 25,000 units of senior housing, many with supportive services that
dramatically improve resident quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Current developments and units that were built under the
Section 202 Program continue to be funded, however, there is no funding
available for new developments or new projects to build more housing for
seniors under this program; and
WHEREAS, This program has not received funding during the appropri-
ations process since 2011; and
WHEREAS, As the senior population grows and affordable housing contin-
ues to be in short supply, the State of New York cannot afford to lose a
tried-and-true program that provides housing for such an important popu-
lation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Congress of the United States be and hereby is
respectfully memorialized by this Legislative Body to restore funding to
the 202 senior housing program operated by the Department of Housing and
Urban Development; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the President of the Senate of the United States, the Speaker
of the House of Representatives, and to each member of the Congress of
the United States from the State of New York.
