COMMENDING the America Diabetes Association upon
the occasion of hosting its New York EXPO on March
11, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
organizations which work to serve the health care needs of the citizens
of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the America Diabetes Association upon the occasion of hosting
its New York EXPO on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Jacob Javits
Convention Center in New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, It is expected that more than 10,000 people will attend the
ADA's free EXPO, where they will receive the latest information on
preventing and managing diabetes and its deadly complications, and learn
how to keep themselves and their family healthy; and
WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is a United
States-based association working to fight the consequences of diabetes
and to help those affected by the disease; the ADA funds research to
manage, cure and prevent diabetes (including type 1 diabetes, type 2
diabetes, gestational diabetes, and pre-diabetes); delivers services to
hundreds of communities; provides information for both patients and
health care professionals; and advocates on behalf of people denied
their rights because of diabetes; and
WHEREAS, In 1940, the ADA was founded by 28 physicians; during its
first 30 years, the Association limited its membership to physicians,
health professionals and corporations; in 1970, the Association
underwent a reorganization during which membership was expanded to
include general members; and
WHEREAS, Today, the ADA is a volunteer-driven organization based in
Alexandria, Virginia, with approximately 90 local offices across the
United States; since its inception, the ADA has strived to prevent and
cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by this
deadly disease; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, it was estimated that 29.1 million Americans have
diabetes, and another 86 million have pre-diabetes; and
WHEREAS, The EXPO will give individuals an opportunity to meet and
talk with medical experts about diabetes management, research and
prevention in a friendly environment; this event will allow people to
partake in 3,000 health screenings, enjoy healthy cooking demonstrations
with samples, and partake in a fun Kids Zone with games, as well as meet
a registered dietitian and support group in the new Living with Type 1
area, and much more; and
WHEREAS, In addition, attendees will be able to listen to various
educational and informative presentations on the Main Stage including
guest speaker Mike Golic, from ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" show, who will
share his story about how he was diagnosed with diabetes; there will
also be culinary delights from around the world on the Healthy Eating
stage where Chef Ronaldo Linares will be welcomed; and
WHEREAS, Unfortunately, people of color are disproportionately
affected by diabetes; this EXPO will provide invaluable insight on what
people can do to combat this disease and prevent it from ever surfacing
among younger people; healthy eating habits and exercise needs to be as
natural as sleeping and breathing in order for us to live longer and
more wholesome lives; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the vital importance of
the American Diabetes Association in providing excellence in care
through prevention, education and treatment, and its evident commitment
to this mission; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the American Diabetes Association upon the occasion of hosting
its New York EXPO on March 11, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the American Diabetes Association.
