CONGRATULATING Carmen Covino upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and

WHEREAS, Carmen Covino, affectionately known as Carl, was born on
March 6, 1917; he celebrated this momentous occasion with a Surprise
100th Birthday Party organized by his friends and family at a senior
center in Hamburg, New York; and

WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with his zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Carl Covino valiantly served as a member of the United
States Army during both the Korean War and World War II; and

WHEREAS, During his illustrious military career, Carl Covino
achieved the rank of Corporal T5, and fought under the direction of
renowned senior officer General George Patton; and

WHEREAS, After training in North Carolina in 1943, Carl Covino
served as a machine gunner in the First Army until the Battle of
Saint-Lo when the Allied forces broke through; as a member of the Third
Army, he went to Bastogne, Belgium and finally the Battle of the Bulge;
and

WHEREAS, Carl Covino was decorated with the European-African-Middle
Eastern Campaign and Silver Star attachment, the World War II Victory
Medal, and the French Legion of Honor for his steadfast courage and
bravery; and

WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Carl Covino
married Anastasia "Sally" Hawrylczak, who served as a Private First
Class with the United States Women's Army Corps from 1943 to 1946; and

WHEREAS, Carl Covino retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1979, after 45
years of distinguished service as both an overhead crane operator and a
stock shear man; and

WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and

WHEREAS, This beloved man has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, the late
Anastasia "Sally" Covino, with him throughout have been his four

children and three grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and
awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Carmen Covino upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Carmen Covino.
