COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of the Civil

country and improving the health and well-being of communities
throughout the state and our nation; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
75th Anniversary of the Civil Air Patrol; and

WHEREAS, The Civil Air Patrol (CAP), was founded on December 1,
1941, one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, to supplement
the United States Military during World War II; and

WHEREAS, CAP was founded by citizens committed to helping bolster
the nation's defense in our time of need by using civilian aviation
resources; CAP pilots flew more than 500,000 aviation hours performing a
wide variety of duties including coastal patrol for submarine activity
or ships and personnel in distress, as well as forest and southern
border patrol; and

WHEREAS, On May 26, 1948, Congress passed a law designating CAP as
the Air Force Auxiliary with three primary missions: emergency missions,
cadet programs, and aerospace education; and

WHEREAS, CAP has set itself apart through its emergency mission
work, such as assisting rescuers and state agencies following the
September 11th terrorist attacks, supporting hurricane relief efforts in
2005, 2008 and 2012, responding to the Gulf Coast oil spill in 2010, and
aiding communities during other natural disasters; and

WHEREAS, CAP provides exceptional educational opportunities for
youth through its Cadet Program, nearly 24,000 members strong, providing
access to top national summer flight academies to learn to fly powered
or glider aircraft, as well as more than 30 national programs
encouraging leadership and careers in aviation; and

WHEREAS, CAP's Aerospace Education Program annually works with more
than 1,800 educators and over 150,000 youths (cadets and other students
in classrooms across America) to teach aviation concepts emphasizing
aviation's connection to history, math, science, government and
economics; and

WHEREAS, 24 current New York State Legislators are captains in the
Legislative Squadron of the New York CAP; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Civil Air Patrol; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
