HONORING Leroy Twiggs upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Living the Legacy
Award by the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center,
on October 20, 2016
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Leroy Twiggs
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Living the
Legacy Award by the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center, to be
celebrated at its 2016 Annual Legacy Event on Thursday, October 20,
2016, at the Radisson Hotel, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Living the Legacy Award is given annually to a
community leader who has made a difference in the Capital District; and
WHEREAS, A steadfast advocate for the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health
Center (WYH), Leroy Twiggs played an important role in its success
through his 20 years of service on its Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Today, Leroy Twiggs is retired as a member of the Board; he
was most notable for being an active participant and contributing
thoughtful guidance on a number of Board and Board/Staff Committees; and
WHEREAS, Leroy Twiggs' professional career spanned both the public
and private sectors; he worked for The New York State Department of
Health and the McDonald's Corporation where he served as an
Owner/Operator of two franchised restaurants in downtown Albany; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement as an entrepreneur, Leroy Twiggs
was employed as a Human Resources Specialist at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, With the belief in providing access to consistent quality
healthcare without regard to income, Leroy Twiggs was always quick to
volunteer when the need to advocate arose for issues impacting WYH; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Leroy Twiggs served on Boards of Directors of
several local non-profit organizations including the Friendship
Community Development Corporation, Safe, Inc. of Schenectady, the
Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region as well as
the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Leroy Twiggs has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, Leroy Twiggs and his wife, Brenda, live in Latham, New
York; they are the parents of three adult children, Deborah, William
Daschel, and Cordea, and the grateful grandparents of Jazmine, Madison,
Kevin Joshua, Jada, Aevin, and Kylah, all of whom feel privileged to be
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Leroy Twiggs upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Living the Legacy Award by the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Leroy Twiggs.
