Senate Resolution No. 1389

COMMEMORATING the March for Science on April 22,
2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
events and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the March for Science is to champion
robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human
freedom and prosperity, and to unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to
call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders
and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public
interest; and
WHEREAS, Science is a tool for seeking answers to society's most
pressing problems and should influence policy and guide our long-term
decision making; and we should strive to oppose efforts to discredit
scientific consensus and restrict scientific discovery; and
WHEREAS, Scientific breakthroughs can change the course of our
society for the better, such as eradicating deadly diseases, advancing
new modes of transportation, mapping the human genome, and fighting the
impacts of human-induced climate change; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York is a hub for exceptional scientific
work, ranging from nanotechnology advancements to cutting-edge
agricultural science to medical research to end cancer, with many
top-ranked scientific institutions of research and learning; and
WHEREAS, The March for Science serves as a starting point for more
engagement between the scientific community and policy; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body congratulates all the scientists and
scientifically-minded citizens of New York State who have embraced the
responsible work of using science to preserve society for future
generations, now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the March for Science on April 22, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the March for Science.
