Senate Resolution No. 1408

COMMENDING Aviva Abramovsky upon the occasion of
being appointed Dean of the University at Buffalo
School of Law

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this
great State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Aviva Abramovsky upon the occasion of being named the Dean of
the University at Buffalo School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Aviva Abramovsky, current Associate Dean for International
Initiatives and Kaufman Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at
Syracuse University College of Law, will take over leadership of the
University at Buffalo School of Law school in July of 2017; and

WHEREAS, This dynamic woman was chosen for the position because of
her impressive leadership experience, academic accomplishments, and
creative, entrepreneurial vision for the University at Buffalo School of
Law and the future of legal education; and

WHEREAS, Aviva Abramovsky received her undergraduate degree in
industrial and labor relations from Cornell University, and earned her
law degree from the University of Pennsylvania; during this time, she
was the Managing Editor of the Journal of Constitutional Law, where she
was published in the field of ethics; and

WHEREAS, As Associate Dean at Syracuse University, Aviva Abramovsky
led efforts to bring a more global perspective to the College of Law;
she spearheaded Master of Laws and two-year Juris Doctor programs for
foreign lawyers and launched a visiting scholars and researchers
program; and

WHEREAS, Aviva Abramovsky's diligent work on establishing
partnerships abroad led to the creation of a new international student
exchange program; she also created a legal English pre-matriculation
program, and directed Syracuse's clinical internship program in London;
and

WHEREAS, In addition, Aviva Abramovsky holds the position of Editor
of LSN Insurance Law, Legislation, & Policy; she also served as an
academic evaluator for the American Bar Association's federal judiciary
committees for then-Supreme Court nominees Samuel Alito and Sonya
Sotomayor; and

WHEREAS, As the daughter of two alumni from the University of
Buffalo, Aviva Abramovsky believes that legal education in the United
States is at an inflection point, and the Buffalo School of Law is
perfectly poised to take the lead in providing innovative,

multidisciplinary and modern legal education in a world where the
practice of law is radically changing; and

WHEREAS, Aviva Abramovsky has proven herself an outstanding leader
and manager throughout her impressive career in academia and law; her
strong academic credentials will build on the University at Buffalo
School of Law's legacy of excellence, while honoring its proud
traditions; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our colleges;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Aviva Abramovsky upon the occasion of being appointed Dean of
the University at Buffalo School of Law, and to wish to her continued
success in her new position; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Aviva Abramovsky.
