COMMENDING Queensborough Community College upon
the occasion of hosting its 2017 Partners For
Progress Gala, and paying tribute to this year's
honoree
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Queensborough Community College upon the occasion of hosting its
2017 Partners For Progress Gala on Thursday, April 27, 2017, and to pay
tribute to this year's honoree; and
WHEREAS, This year's distinguished honorees being recognized for
their unwavering dedication to the mission of Queensborough Community
College, and their loyal support of its students include: Art Gallery
Partner of the Year, Thomas Chen, Founder, President and CEO of Crystal
Window & Door Systems, Ltd; Community Partners of the Year, Jackson and
Muriel Lum, Professor Emeritus, Engineering Technology, QBCC/CUNY; and
Kupferberg Holocaust Center Partner of the Year, Benjamin L. Schwartz,
President and CEO, Metropolitan Property Services, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Situated in the most diverse county in the United States,
Queensborough Community College reflects its surroundings with a student
body hailing from more than 140 countries speaking 84 different
languages; and
WHEREAS, With over 17 academic departments, more than 26,000
students are enrolled in either degree, certificate or continuing
education programs on the campus; and
WHEREAS, Queensborough Academies is an initiative which offers both
extended outreach and intervention strategies to help students succeed,
as well as in-depth writing courses, internships, and educational
opportunities at the college's cultural resource centers: The Kupferberg
Holocaust Resource Center and Archives, the QCC Art Gallery and the
Performing Arts Center - all serving to reinforce classroom teaching;
and
WHEREAS, Queensborough Community College is under the able
leadership of President Dr. Diane B. Call; today, over half of the
college's students continue their education and go on to four-year CUNY
colleges or for additional skills training for career advancement; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to research in both teaching methodologies and
individual disciplines, 58 percent of Queensborough Community College's
faculty hold doctoral degrees; and
WHEREAS, It is only fitting that this Legislative Body extend its
highest commendation to the administration, teachers and staff, both
past and present, of Queensborough Community College for their
dedication and commitment to the students and community in the creation
of a better world for the leaders of tomorrow; and
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pauses in its deliberations to
commend Queensborough Community College upon the occasion of hosting its
2017 Partners For Progress Gala, and to pay tribute to this year's
honoree; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Diane B. Call, President, Queensborough Community
College, and the aforementioned honorees.
