HONORING Edward F. Dougherty posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition
by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on May 8, 2017

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Edward F. Dougherty posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-Deceased
Veteran Ceremony to be celebrated on Monday, May 8, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty was born to Helen (McGraw) and John J.
Dougherty, Sr. on October 25, 1922, in Troy, New York; he attended Saint
Patrick's School, and La Salle Institute in Troy; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty served his country as a member of the
United States Navy as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class aboard the combat ships
USS Dixie and McCord (DD-534) during World War II 1942-1945; and

WHEREAS, After his discharge, Edward F. Dougherty worked at American
Locomotive Works, Borden Dairy, and retired from the Public Utilities
Department of the City of Troy Water Works; in addition, he owned and
operated Brownie's Tavern; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty was an active and vital force in his
community; he was a member of the Rensselaer County Taverns Association,
and the 112st Lansingburgh Softball Team; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty's favorite pastimes were hunting and
fishing; he was both the founder and an officer of the North Troy Stag
Rod and Gun Club; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty died on January 3, 1976, at the age of
53; and

WHEREAS, Edward F. Dougherty is survived by his wife of 30 years,
Dorothy (Zampier) Dougherty; his two sons, Edward F. Dougherty and
Kenneth Dougherty; one daughter, Deborah West; seven grandchildren,
Kevin, Lisa, Kim, Kerry, Christy, Cheryl and Christopher; and two
sisters, Helen Rita Fogarty and Jean Marie Will; as well as three
brothers, John J. Dougherty, Jr., Francis Daniel Dougherty, and Thomas
P. Dougherty; and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edward F. Dougherty posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its
Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Ceremony on May 8, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Edward F. Dougherty.
