Senate Resolution No. 1830

COMMENDING Marvin Holland upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Local 372 NYC
Board of Education Employees on May 3, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of worthy purpose whose endeavors
have enhanced the quality of education in the great City and State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Marvin Holland upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Local 372 NYC Board of Education Employees at its Annual
Scholarship Dinner Dance on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, aboard the
Hornblower Infinity Yacht; and
WHEREAS, The Transport Workers Union Local 100, the largest
transportation union in the country, representing over 42,000 members;
and
WHEREAS, A native New Yorker, Marvin Holland studied Industrial
Labor Relations at Cornell University; after college, he proudly served
his country as a member of the United States Navy for four years; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Marvin Holland began his career as a cleaner with
the New York City Transit Authority in the Stations Department; and
WHEREAS, Always an active Local 100 member, Marvin Holland became a
Shop Steward in 2001, and was elected to the TWU Local 100 Executive
Board in 2003; he became a delegate of the NYC Central Labor Council in
2004, and was elected as Section Chair of the Stations Department in
2010; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Marvin Holland founded Take Back Our Union (TBOU);
and
WHEREAS, Due to his strong advocacy for human and workers' rights,
Marvin Holland has been asked to sit on the boards of many groups,
including the Latino Leadership Institute, the Mid-Manhattan Branch of
the NAACP, the Making The Grade Foundation, the African-American Day
Parade Advisory Board, and PA'LANTE Harlem, a housing advocacy group;
and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
community, Marvin Holland has been the recipient of numerous awards and
accolades including the 2014 Latino Leadership Institute Labor Award,
the 2014 Making the Grade Community Award and the prestigious 2016 Labor
Award by the NYS Black & Latino Legislative Caucus, as well as the 2016
Good Scout Award, by the Boy Scouts of America; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 35 years, Carole,
and their three children, Justin, Alizabeth, and Xavier, all of whom
have shown him love and support and rejoice in his many achievements;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Marvin Holland upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Local 372 NYC Board of Education Employees on May 3,
2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Marvin Holland.
