HONORING Alexandria M. Iwanenko upon the occasion
of her designation as recipient of the 2017
Independent Sector Student Community Service Award
by the Commission on Independent Colleges and
Universities on March 6, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Alexandria M. Iwanenko upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2017 Independent Sector Student Community Service Award by the
Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities at its Annual
Meeting Reception on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Cornerstone
Restaurant in Albany, New York; and

WHEREAS, A senior at Canisius College studying both
Spanish/International Relations and Latin American Studies, Alexandria
M. Iwanenko is a perfect example of the next generation of leaders and
agents of change; and

WHEREAS, This exceptional young woman received this auspicious award
for her remarkable leadership and steadfast and unremitting commitment
to her community; and

WHEREAS, As an outstanding student, Alexandria M. Iwanenko is a
member of the Canisius All-College Honors Program; in addition, she is
actively involved in the Campus Ministry, and helps organize various
justice-based events; and

WHEREAS, Alexandria M. Iwanenko served as the community school
liaison for the United Way of Erie, Pennsylvania; in this capacity, she
assisted community school directors and school leadership teams in the
identification and alignment of appropriate services and resources based
on specific needs and school goals, conducted community awareness and
engagement by identifying advocacy opportunities related to community
schools, and recruited and trained volunteers to assist in community
school activities; and

WHEREAS, This dynamic young woman was also a teaching aide at Erie 1
BOCES where she worked with special education students, volunteered with
Peace Action in New York State, helping to organize peace advocacy
events in local communities; worked for Urban Leadership Learning
Habitat for Humanity, and Buffalo Human Rights and Genocide Studies; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Alexandria M. Iwaneko is an active participant
of the Education, Nurture, Encouragement, Readiness and Growth for
Youth, Model United National Diplomacy Organization, and Peace Action
New York State; and

WHEREAS, Alexandria M. Iwanenko is the recipient of numerous awards
and accolades including the 2017 Community Upstander Recognition by The
Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo; the 2017 Amy Betros Community
Service Award by the Canisius College All-College Honors Program, the
2017 Distinguished Senior Award by the Canisius College Alumni
Association, and the 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Student Award by
Canisius College; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Alexandria M. Iwanenko is the beneficiary of
the H.D. Paley Memorial Scholarship, the Martin Luther King Jr.
Scholarship, and the New York State Merit Scholarship; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Alexandria M. Iwanenko has
displayed throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, With her sense of civic duty and her commitment to others,
Alexandria M. Iwanenko represents the best development of the potential
which is inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alexandria M. Iwanenko upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the 2017 Independent Sector Student Community Service Award
by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Alexandria M. Iwanenko.
