COMMENDING the Brewster Lions Club upon the
occasion of celebrating its 90th Anniversary
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy
accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Brewster Lions Club upon the occasion of its 90th
Anniversary to be celebrated with a dinner at Centennial Golf Club on
Sunday, May 7, 2017; and
WHEREAS, The International Lions Club was founded by Chicago
businessman Melvin Jones in 1917; and
WHEREAS, In 1925, Helen Keller, while addressing the Lions
International Convention in Ohio, urged this new club to serve the blind
and visually impaired and called upon them to become "knights of the
blind in the crusade against darkness"; and
WHEREAS, Since that time, the Lions Club has committed itself to
serving those with visual impairments; and
WHEREAS, The Brewster Lions Club was formed on March 15, 1927, by 27
charter members; and
WHEREAS, The Brewster Lions Club helped those in need during the
Depression by distributing turkeys on Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets
at Christmas; today, it continues to conduct food drives for the local
food pantry; and
WHEREAS, The Brewster Lions Club is a loyal supporter of the Boy
Scouts and the Girl Scouts, and is the charter club for Boy Scout Troop
No. 1; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Brewster Lions Club promotes glaucoma
screening, collects old eyeglasses for redistribution, and awards
scholarships every year to two outstanding Brewster High School
graduating seniors; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proudly moved to honor and commend
the members of the Brewster Lions Club, past and present, who have
labored so conscientiously to secure and improve the quality of life for
the community it serves; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Brewster Lions Club upon the occasion of celebrating its
90th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Brewster Lions Club.
