HONORING Dr. Jonathan Garlick upon the occasion of
his induction into the Monticello High School Hall
of Distinction Class of 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Dr. Jonathan Garlick upon the occasion of his induction into the
Monticello High School Hall of Distinction Class of 2016; this momentous
occasion was celebrated on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Arnold
Packer Hughs Auditorium in Monticello High School; and

WHEREAS, A 1970 graduate of Monticello High School, Dr. Jonathan
Garlick serves Tufts University as a Professor at its Schools of Dental
Medicine, Medicine, Engineering and the Jonathan M. Tisch College of
Civic Life; and

WHEREAS, As a clinician and translational research scientist, Dr.
Jonathan Garlick has pioneered the use of stem cells for tissue
engineering to develop new treatments for oral health, cancer and
complications from diabetes; and

WHEREAS, In addition, he established Tufts University's Center for
Integrated Tissue Engineering to accelerate the discovery and clinical
application of new drugs; and

WHEREAS, As a science and biomedical educator, Dr. Jonathan Garlick
teaches his students to explore the personal and societal impacts of
science as a bridge towards moral responsibility and social action;
furthermore, he leads a national science education initiative at Tisch
College in Civic Science to foster active citizenship; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jonathan Garlick received his D.D.S. and Ph.D. from
Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, and his Oral Pathology training
from Long Island Jewish Medical Center; he has been a Talloires Scholar
in Residence and was awarded Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine's
Distinguished Alumnus Award as well as the President and Chancellor's
Award, the State University of New York's highest teaching honor; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. Jonathan Garlick has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Dr. Jonathan Garlick has
displayed throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their

commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Dr. Jonathan Garlick, that future generations may know and appreciate
his admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Jonathan Garlick upon the occasion of his induction into the
Monticello High School Hall of Distinction Class of 2016; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Jonathan Garlick.
