COMMEMORATING the 30th Anniversary of the Downtown
Express newspaper
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and
recognize those journalism and media outlets which, through their
coverage of local, state, and national issues have shared current and
historical events with their readers; and
WHEREAS, Community newspapers play a vital role in providing
information to local residents; and
WHEREAS, Downtown Express is a community newspaper founded as the
Battery News in May of 1987; and
WHEREAS, The Battery News quickly expanded to also cover the
Financial District and was rebranded Downtown Express in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Downtown Express has covered important national events,
including the 1993 WTC bombings and the terrorist attacks on September
11th; and
WHEREAS, After September 11th, Downtown Express disseminated
additional information about air quality, street closures, and other
local issues and began publishing weekly issues; and
WHEREAS, The Downtown Express has been at the forefront of
documenting Lower Manhattan's recovery from Superstorm Sandy; and
WHEREAS, For the past 30 years, Downtown Express has documented
Lower Manhattan's rise from an "urban ghost town" to a thriving
mixed-use community; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Downtown Express
on its 30th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this exceptional media outlet and its valuable
contributions to the community, fully confident that it will continue to
enjoy the successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Downtown
Express; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Downtown Express.
