Senate Resolution No. 2274

BY: Senator MARCHIONE

HONORING New York State's World War II veterans
for their bravery in service to their country

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and

WHEREAS, World War II (1939-1945) was the most widespread,
destructive, and consequential conflict in history; in many ways it was
the first modern war, in which airpower played a vital role both on land
and at sea, however, many actions were ultimately won by the
determination and grit of the foot soldier; and

WHEREAS, The attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought the United
States into the War, and New York became the principal port of
embarkation for the warfront; the presence of troops, the inflow of
refugees, the wartime industries, the dispatch of fleets, and the
dissemination of news and propaganda from media outlets, changed New
York; and

WHEREAS, As the largest state, New York supplied the most resources
during World War II, manufacturing 11% of total United States military
armaments produced during the War, and suffered 31,215 casualties; and

WHEREAS, The meritorious soldiers from New York State fought in all
of the important battles during the War including Iwo Jima, Coral Sea,
Midway, Guadalcanal, Monte Cassino, Normandy, the Bulge, Okinawa, and
many others; and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor New York State's World War II veterans for their bravery in
service to their country.
