CELEBRATING International Day Against Homophobia,
Transphobia and Biphobia, May 17, 2017

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge extraordinary
holidays and occasions that enrich the people of the State of New York;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and
Biphobia, and to celebrate sexual and gender diversity, Wednesday, May
17, 2017; and

WHEREAS, First observed as International Day Against Homophobia in
2005, today this holiday is known as International Day Against
Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia; and

WHEREAS, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and
Biphobia draws our attention to the discrimination experienced by the
LGBT community all over the world; and

WHEREAS, Almost 20 percent of all hate crimes reported to police
were based upon sexual orientation or gender identity; and

WHEREAS, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and
Biphobia raises awareness of this awful reality; and

WHEREAS, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and
Biphobia is now celebrated in more than 130 countries by millions of
people to support human rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation
and gender identity or expression; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and
Biphobia, May 17, 2017.
