COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of 140 Cadman
Plaza West on June 10, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
those co-operatives in the State of New York which have made a
substantial impact on the quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of 140 Cadman Plaza West, to be
celebrated at a Gala on Saturday, June 10, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Cadman Plaza North, Inc. is a co-op located at 140 Cadman
Plaza West in Brooklyn, New York, in the area commonly known as Brooklyn
Heights; and

WHEREAS, In May of 1967, the first shareholders moved into the new
27-story, 250-unit Cadman Plaza West building; it was one of the early
middle income co-operatives funded as part of the Mitchell-Lama Housing
Program, designed to create new opportunities for middle income families
to own their own homes within New York City, rather than move to the
suburbs; and

WHEREAS, The new tenants of 140 Cadman Plaza West enjoyed Brooklyn
Heights, which was a beautiful, tree-lined, relatively peaceful
community; residents watched the surrounding areas of Carroll Gardens,
Cobble Hill and others develop into exciting neighborhoods filled with
destination restaurants, shops and attractions; and

WHEREAS, In the late 1960s and early 1970s, 140 Cadman Plaza West
was joined by Whitman Close at 75 Henry Street, and Cadman Towers at 101
Clark Street; 140 Cadman Plaza West joined forces with the Brooklyn
Heights Association and its neighboring co-operatives to fight the
overdevelopment and infrastructure strain impacting its neighborhood;
and

WHEREAS, Today, 140 Cadman Plaza West is a vibrant community
composed of people of all ages, races, religions and backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of its Board of Directors:
Ted Valand, President, Chair of Legal and Legislative Committees;
Jeffrey Beck, Vice President; Henry Fleary, Treasurer, and Chair of
Finance Committee; Eva Baide, Secretary; Keith Klein, Chair of Building
and Grounds/Security Committee, and Communications Committee; Roberto
Gautier, Community Affairs and Communications; Rick Landy, Chair of
Community Affairs Committee; Rene Lennon, Chair of Priorities Committee,
and Anil Vora, Priorities, 140 Cadman Plaza West is a solid cornerstone
of the community, and stands ready to continue to preserve and improve
the quality of life of its residents for many years to come; and

WHEREAS, Residential buildings enhance the well-being and vitality
of their community and those of long-standing such as 140 Cadman Plaza

West show a sustained commitment to excellence and certainly have earned
our recognition and applause; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of 140 Cadman Plaza West on June 10,
2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members of the Board of Directors, Cadman Plaza
North, Inc.
