MOURNING the death of David L. Hawkins, long-time
real estate broker, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins of Warwick, New York, died on Monday, May
15, 2017, at the age of 74; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins was born on August 9, 1942, in Middletown,
New York, to James and Mabel Fox Hawkins; and

WHEREAS, After earning his master's degree at SUNY New Paltz, David
L. Hawkins began his professional career teaching art in the Minisink
Valley School District, and later the Warwick Valley School District,
before pursuing a profession in real estate; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins taught several real estate classes at SUNY
Orange and the Orange County Board of Realtors; and

WHEREAS, In 1972, David L. Hawkins founded D. L. Hawkins and
Associates, Inc.; he was known for his "Buy Land" slogan, signs and
license plate; and

WHEREAS, For his devoted service to his occupation, David L. Hawkins
was the recipient of the 1979 Realtor of the Year by the Orange County
Board of Realtors and was honored with the NYSCAR Lifetime Achievement
Award at the 2016 Dealmaker Awards event; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins was an active member and founder of the
Commercial and Investment Division of the New York State Association of
Realtors, serving as President in both 1979 and 1987; he also held the
position of President of the Orange County Association of Realtors in
1999; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins' commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, David L. Hawkins held the
auspicious role of President of the Warwick Valley Rotary Club and
founding contributor and Board Member of the Community Foundation of
Orange and Sullivan Counties; in addition, he was a member of numerous
organizations including the Middletown Rotary Club and Rotary
International; and

WHEREAS, David L. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Margaret; his
three sons, David Jr. (Michelle), James (Denise) and Jason (Tracy); one
daughter, Susan; 13 grandchildren, Joshua, Jordynn, Brady, Ryan,
Caitlin, Jimmy, Erik, Charles, Corinne, Madison, Ian, Paige and Cade;
his great-granddaughter, Adaline; his sister, Barbara (David) Higgins;
and numerous nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, David L. Hawkins leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of David L. Hawkins, long-time real estate broker,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of David L. Hawkins.
