COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of the Danish
Athletic Club on September 9, 2017
WHEREAS, In the course of the evolving development of this Empire
State, if the ingredients of shared concern and responsive endeavor
combine in the commitment to society, there have emerged among the
distinguished citizens of the State of New York certain organizations
which warrant special recognition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Danish Athletic Club, to be
celebrated with a Dinner Dance on Saturday, September 9, 2017, in
Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, After more than a century, the Danish Athletic Club has
become a true institution within the Bay Ridge Scandinavian community;
and
WHEREAS, The Danish Athletic Club was founded in 1892, by Danish
Immigrants eager to keep up the good feeling generated by the strong
showing of Danish athletes in a December 1891 International tug-o-war
contest; the event was held at Madison Square Garden and fostered a
feeling of pride in Brooklyn's Danish Community; and
WHEREAS, The first formal meeting of the club was held in February
of 1892, in Pipers Hall on Court Street; the organization grew rapidly
in its early years, thanks in part to the Nordlyset, the Danish language
newspaper, which publicized its activities; and
WHEREAS, Although the Danish Athletic Club was founded to promote
participation in gymnastics and various other sports among members of
Brooklyn's Danish-American community, it gradually expanded beyond
sports activities into social and philanthropic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the Danish Athletic Club has hosted
numerous meetings and seasonal events for organizations such as the
Swedish Folk Dancers of New York, the Norwegian 17th of May Parade
Committee, the Scandinavian Sports Club, Vasa Folk Dancers, Telemark Ski
Club and the Sons of Norway; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 125 year history, the Danish
Athletic Club has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and
communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Danish Athletic Club is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Danish Athletic
Club; and
WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication and successful
efforts, it is the custom of this Legislative Body to extend its highest
commendation to the Danish Athletic Club of Brooklyn, New York, New
York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Danish Athletic Club on
September 9, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Danish Athletic Club, Brooklyn, New York.
