COMMENDING the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Inc. upon
the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those musical organizations that have brought entertainment and
cultural enrichment to the citizens of the great State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Inc. upon the occasion of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and

WHEREAS, For a century, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta has strived to
enrich the cultural life of Adirondack communities with live,
professionally performed classical music and educational opportunities
for all ages; the orchestra performs 18-20 times during a six week
summer season, providing a unique amenity to the residents, both
year-round and seasonal, that is rarely found in such a rural area; and

WHEREAS, The presence of a professional orchestra in the community
enhances the Adirondacks as a place where true re-creation can occur by
offering a musical experience which is both uplifting and enriching; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta serves as an economic
boon to the community as an employer, bringing 21 professional musicians
and their friends and families to live in the Adirondacks for the
performance season; and

WHEREAS, The Lake Placid Sinfonietta originated in 1917, at a
private hotel, but grew to be embraced by a community which valued the
presence of the arts in their lives; when the hotel failed as a private
business, the musicians who had been coming each year to perform and
community members who had fallen in love with the music joined forces to
form Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Currently in its 100th summer of performance, the Lake
Placid Sinfonietta, under the luminous leadership of Music Director Ron
Spigelman, is offering six free community outdoor concerts in Lake
Placid, a free morning concert for children in Lake Placid, and a free
concert in Saranac Lake; and

WHEREAS, A six concert series at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts
features top performers from around the world, and modest admission
prices; the orchestra will also perform this summer in Tupper Lake at
the Wild Center, and in North Creek at the Tannery Pond Community Center
bringing its artistic product to those rural communities; and

WHEREAS, For the third year, in addition to the full orchestra
performances, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta is presenting LPS Pro Musica,
a four concert chamber music series in Lake Placid, Keene Valley and
Elizabethtown, New York, under the artistic direction of pianist, Navah
Perlman; and

WHEREAS, The presence of the orchestra during the six week festival
season has a significant economic impact; salaries paid to musicians
return to the community in the form of housing and living expenses; in
addition to providing an artistic amenity to the community, musicians
generate commerce through their presence as summer residents; and

WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Executive Director,
Deborah Sutin Fitts, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta continues its cultural
mission of sharing a love of classical choral music with its friends and
neighbors throughout the Adirondacks; and

WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts
of our Nation, to honor our artists, and to express our appreciation to
everyone who patronizes the arts; and as we celebrate the arts, we
celebrate and give thanks to our American freedom, the only atmosphere
in which artists can truly create and in which art is truly the
expression of the soul; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Inc. upon the occasion of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Deborah Sutin Fitts, Executive Director, Lake Placid
Sinfonietta, Inc.
