HONORING Roger Cook upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Making Democracy
Work Award by the League of Women Voters of
Buffalo/Niagara on June 3, 2017

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, Roger Cook has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Roger Cook
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Making
Democracy Work Award by the League of Women Voters of Buffalo/Niagara on
Saturday, June 3, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Called upon to contribute his time and talents to countless
civic and charitable endeavors, Roger Cook has always given of himself
unstintingly; and

WHEREAS, Roger Cook's activism evolved from his early years in
college in Western New York, where he pursued a doctorate at the
University of Buffalo; and

WHEREAS, As the Director of the WNY Council on Occupational Safety
and Health for 29 years, Roger Cook was instrumental in forming
coalitions such as the OSHA-Environmental Network, the Ecumenical Task
Force of the Niagara Frontier, the New York State Labor-Environmental
Network and the New York State Coalition for Economic Justice; and

WHEREAS, Most recently, Roger Cook has been political chair of the
Sierra Club, a member of WNY Working Families Party executive board, and
co-facilitator of the Climate Justice Campaign of Western New York; and

WHEREAS, On Grand Island, Roger Cook has been an active member of
Quality Quest and presently serves on the Grand Island Economic
Development Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Roger Cook has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Roger Cook has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Roger Cook, that future generations may know and appreciate his

admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Roger Cook upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Making Democracy Work Award by the League of Women Voters of
Buffalo/Niagara on June 3, 2017; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Roger Cook.
