Senate Resolution No. 3105

HONORING Warren C. Saunders, Jr. posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Warren C.
Saunders, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate, to be presented at the Saratoga
County Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran Ceremony on Tuesday, September 19, 2017,
in Ballston Spa, New York; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on April 1, 1925 in Corinth, New York, Warren C.
Saunders, Jr. graduated from Corinth Central School in 1943; and
WHEREAS, Warren C. Saunders, Jr. entered the United States Army on
July 19, 1943, and valiantly served in the European Theater from March
11, 1944 to August 14, 1945, with the 739th Military Police Battalion;
as a Military Policeman with the 3rd Division, he was primarily
responsible for guarding POW's; and
WHEREAS, This brave soldier was discharged on February 8, 1946, at
the esteemed rank of Private 1st Class; and
WHEREAS, For his courageous service during the Second World War,
Warren C. Saunders, Jr. was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Meritorious
Unit Award, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Good
Conduct Medal; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Warren C.
Saunders, Jr. worked for International Paper Company and managed a local
store for Standard Furniture; and
WHEREAS, Warren C. Saunders, Jr. was appointed Deputy Saratoga
County Treasurer in 1968, a position he held for 12 years; he was then
elected Saratoga County Treasurer, where he served until his retirement
in 1983; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Warren C. Saunders, Jr. served as Corinth
Village Clerk for 24 years; after his retirement from Saratoga County,
he associated with the Densmore Funeral Home for 10 years; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Warren C. Saunders, Jr. was
an active member of many organizations, including Corinth Emergency
Squad, New York State Ambulance Association, Boy and Girl Scouts, PTA,
Rotary International, CDA Minstrels, Corinth Theatre Guild, VFW and the
Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post No. 533; furthermore, he served
as a Village Chairman for more than two decades; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Warren C. Saunders, Jr. demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Warren C. Saunders, Jr. posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Warren C. Saunders, Jr.
