HONORING Margaret Overdorf upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of the Irish Woman of
the Year Award by the Amherst Gaelic League
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those
individuals and organizations which foster ethnic pride and enhance the
profile of cultural diversity which strengthens the fabric of the
communities of New York State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Margaret
Overdorf upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Irish
Woman of the Year Award by the Amherst Gaelic League; and
WHEREAS, Margaret Overdorf, affectionately known as Peg, has
selflessly dedicated more than 40 years of service to the Valley
Community Association (VCA), an organization which serves the needs of
the Buffalo River community through the provision of programs aimed at
improving the social well-being of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Since 1979, Peg Overdorf has been instrumental in VCA's
acquisitions of properties developed to fit the needs of the community
including, the Valley Child Care Center, after-school programs, academic
and community centers, and nature trails and parklands; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to the community, Peg Overdorf has implemented
numerous neighborhood events such as the Rally in the Valley and the Old
Neighborhood St. Patrick's Day Parade; most recently, she secured 17
grants to build the Buffalo River Fest Park and assisted with the
construction of the Mutual Riverfront Park; and
WHEREAS, Peg Overdorf has been the proud recipient of countless
awards and accolades some of which include: the Bishop Timon High School
Community Service Award, Trocaire College McAuley Award, Goin' South
Civic Pride Award, All America Cities Civic Empowerment Award, Greater
South Buffalo Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, Buffalo
Niagara Riverkeeper Green Key Award and the Leadership Buffalo Service
Award; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Buffalo, New York, Peg Overdorf has
personified the spirit of volunteerism, demonstrating a gift for
leadership, a devotion to family, a commitment to her Irish heritage,
and a determination to make her community a better place in which to
live; and
WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Peg Overdorf, that future generations may know and appreciate her
admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Margaret Overdorf upon the occasion of her designation as Irish
Woman of the Year by the Amherst Gaelic League; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Margaret Overdorf.
