COMMEMORATING the 130th Anniversary of the
Ziegele-Phoenix Building
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to support the
preservation and commemoration of historical landmarks which express and
preserve the social and cultural origins of this great State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the Ziegele-Phoenix Building; and
WHEREAS, The Ziegele-Phoenix Building began as the Ziegele Brewery,
one of the pioneering brewing companies in Buffalo, New York; and
WHEREAS, After the building was destroyed by fire in 1887, the
brewery was rebuilt just one year later at the corner of Washington
Street and Virginia Place, and was renamed Phoenix Brewery to signify
its extraordinary rise from the ashes; and
WHEREAS, Noted for its electrically powered bottling process,
Phoenix Brewery was producing 100,000 barrels of beer per year by 1908;
and
WHEREAS, Phoenix Brewery closed its doors for good in 1920, due to
prohibition; since that time, the building has been used as a gym, skate
park, antiques dealer, and Lay-Z-Boy Furniture warehouse; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, Sinatra and Company Real Estate announced its
plans to redevelop the Phoenix Brewery into a mixed-use building of
nearly 3,000 square feet of commercial space and 31 lofts; and
WHEREAS, In an effort to give back to the community, this esteemed
company donated significant funds to Say YES Buffalo, an organization
developed to strengthen the Western New York economy by investing in the
education of Buffalo's future workforce; and
WHEREAS, In April of 2017, the new Phoenix Brewery Apartments won an
award for Excellence in Historic Preservation from the Preservation
League of New York State; and
WHEREAS, The construction of a building, in its historical
perspective, symbolizes the will, the circumstances and the resolve of a
people and a community; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Ziegele-Phoenix Building's rich
history and enduring contribution to the heritage of the State of New
York, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to join in the
celebration of its 130th Anniversary so that present and future
generations may come to appreciate the unique significance which its
history plays in the progression of our State and Nation's evolution;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the Ziegele-Phoenix Building; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sinatra and Company Real Estate, Buffalo, New York.
