HONORING Dr. John Flateau upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition after many years
of distinguished service to higher education at
Medgar Evers College
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Dr. John Flateau upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition after many years of distinguished service to higher
education at Medgar Evers College; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Flateau has devoted a lifetime of service to the
economic, political and social empowerment of communities of color and
humankind; he has co-founded and guided several institutions, as well as
community and faith-based development corporations, creating economic
empowerment, affordable housing, youth, educational and senior services;
and
WHEREAS, The fourth of seven children to Jeanne and Sidney Flateau,
John Flateau earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from
New York University, Master of Public Administration degree from Baruch
College, and a Master of Philosophy degree, Master of Arts degree and
Ph.D. in Political Science from The Graduate Center, City University of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Today, Dr. John Flateau empowers future generations as a
Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Medgar Evers
College, where he served as Vice President and Dean of its School of
Business; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Flateau co-founded and directs the DuBois Bunche
Center for Public Policy and US Census Information Center at Medgar
Evers College, where he has been instrumental in creating significant
project financing, and minority and women business government
contracting; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Dr. John Flateau has also helped create
business government contracting, disparity studies, and employment and
training programs, as well as empowerment zones and an international
trade center, leveraging public-private partnerships; and
WHEREAS, A nationally recognized expert and strategist, Dr. John
Flateau has been the proud recipient of numerous awards and accolades
including the 2017 President's Award by the National Association of
Health Service Executives (NAHSE), New York Region, and the 2017
Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York State Chapter of the National
Association of Minority Contractors; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Flateau is a public commentator and author, with
works such as, Black Brooklyn: The Politics of Ethnicity, Class and
Gender; The Prison Industrial Complex: Race, Crime and Justice in New
York; Blackout: Media Ownership Concentration; and Multi-Billion Dollar
Assets of Brooklyn Caribbean Communities; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, this extraordinary man serves as a
Commissioner of the New York City Board of Elections, and as an elected
Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. John Flateau has
also served as Chief of Staff and campaign coordinator for Mayor David
Dinkins; Deputy Secretary, New York State Senate; Executive Director,
New York State Black, Hispanic, Asian Legislative Caucus; and Senior
Vice President, Empire State Development; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Flateau has given tirelessly of his time and
energies to help train the next generation of fearless, brilliant public
service executives, researchers, policy advocates and activists, and to
advance political, economic, human and cultural rights; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Flateau should be regarded as a true humanitarian;
he has continually devoted himself to public service, demonstrating
great courage and diligence in providing for the care and welfare of the
citizens of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; Dr. John
Flateau is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. John Flateau upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition after many years of distinguished service to higher
education at Medgar Evers College; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. John Flateau.
