COMMENDING Maury Thompson upon the occasion of his
retirement after more than 20 years of distinguished
service to The Post-Star

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalists who have diligently and consistently, year
after year, recorded the history of their communities and brought local
news and news of the larger world to their readers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Maury Thompson upon the occasion of his retirement after more
than 20 years of distinguished service to The Post-Star; he officially
retired on Friday, September 1, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Maury Thompson graduated
from Middlebury College in 1992, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
English; and

WHEREAS, Maury Thompson began his illustrious career with The
Post-Star as a freelancer in 1996; after three years of producing news
stories, sometimes filing several a day, he was hired as a staff writer
in 1999; and

WHEREAS, In his more than two decades at the paper, Maury Thompson
asked tough questions and held public officials accountable; he has
covered countless stories, most notably his coverage of City Hall, the
six-month Finch Pruyn strike, and local and state politics; and

WHEREAS, Prior to his career with The Post-Star, Maury Thompson
enjoyed a variety of jobs including, selling encyclopedias door-to-door,
writing radio commercials, and working as a short order cook at several
restaurants throughout Ticonderoga; and

WHEREAS, One of the greatest journalists of his generation, Maury
Thompson is a gifted writer who through his dedication and commitment to
his community, has brought great distinction to The Post-Star; and

WHEREAS, In addition to receiving numerous awards and accolades, the
mayor of Glens Falls established an official "Maury Thompson Day" by
proclamation; and

WHEREAS, A truly remarkable writer, Maury Thompson plans to continue
writing books and magazine articles in his retirement; he recently
authored, "The Animated Feather Duster" and Other Slow News Day Tales of
the Legendary Facial Hair of Charles Evans Hughes, which will be
available this fall; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his magnanimous career, Maury Thompson served
The Post-Star with intelligence and caring dedication, earning the
admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with
whom he worked, Maury Thompson will be remembered for his honesty,
integrity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of
human problems in his official acts; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Debbie, his three
children and two stepchildren, as well as 12 grandchildren, all of whom
feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his
achievements; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Maury Thompson upon the occasion of his retirement after more
than 20 years of distinguished service to The Post-Star; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Maury Thompson.
