COMMEMORATING the 21st Anniversary of the Wall
Street Project
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Wall Street Project, to be
celebrated at its Economic Summit, "50 Years after the Assassination of
Dr. King: The Struggle Continues for Freedom, Equity, and Inclusion in
Corporate America," on February 8-9, 2018, at the Sheraton New York,
Times Square Hotel, New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1996, the Wall Street Project was officially
launched by Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. and prominent minority
business owners on January 15, 1997, Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday;
and
WHEREAS, The Wall Street Project challenges Corporate America to end
the multibillion-dollar trade deficit with minority vendors and
consumers while working to ensure equal opportunities for culturally
diverse employees, entrepreneurs and consumers; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Wall Street Project uses
Operation Breadbasket's model of research, education, negotiation and
reconciliation to promote inclusion, opportunity and economic growth;
and
WHEREAS, The Wall Street Project encourages public and private
industries to provide more business opportunities for minority and
women-owned companies on Wall Street and throughout the financial
services industry, as well as to improve hiring, promotion and retention
practices; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, the organization promotes intra-trade
relationships among diverse businesses and the naming of more minorities
to corporate boards; and
WHEREAS, The Wall Street Project also works to increase funding for
educational scholarships and voter registration education, and to
increase financial literacy in minority and/or underserved communities
through the work of the One Thousand Churches Connected program; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 21-year history, the Wall Street
Project has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and
communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Wall Street Project is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Wall Street
Project; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Wall Street Project; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Wall Street Project.
