COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the Hamlet
of Lake View, New York, in Erie County
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Hamlet of Lake View, New York,
in Erie County; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the LV 150 Committee, this auspicious
milestone will be celebrated with a myriad of special events held
throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, Located along the banks of Lake Erie, the Hamlet of Lake
View was formed by settlers, in particular the influential Myer family,
in order to establish a stop along the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern
Railway which would eventually become the New York Central Railroad; the
Railroad served most of the Northeast, including extensive trackage in
the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois,
Massachusetts and West Virginia plus additional trackage in the Canadian
provinces of Ontario and Quebec; and
WHEREAS, In 1868, James Walden, the brother of Catherine Myer, was
appointed the first postmaster at the new Lake View Post Office, a
small, frame building located in the center of town; and
WHEREAS, Early residents of Lake View included Ebenezer Ames, Jacob
F. Schoellkopf, and Ebenezer Walden, a prominent Buffalo attorney and
mayor whose family built the Lake View Hotel in 1880 to serve the many
traveling salesmen who arrived on the seven daily trains on the Lake
Shore and Michigan Southern Railway to sell their wares in the
surrounding countryside; and
WHEREAS, By 1890, two more railroads ran through Lake View, the New
York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad (the Nickel Plate Road) and the
Pennsylvania Railroad which brought economic prosperity to the small
community; an electric trolley called the Buffalo & Erie was built to
facilitate travel to and from Buffalo and operated until the mid-1930s;
and
WHEREAS, Through the years, Lake View continued to thrive with the
help of several prominent attorneys from the Buffalo area who built a
summer resort colony called Idlewood in 1886; in the decades to follow,
several other buildings were constructed including the Lake View
Community Church in 1889, Lake View School in 1890, and Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic Church in 1921; the the Day Bicycle Factory was
formed in 1895 and the Lake View Fire Association in 1923; and
WHEREAS, On September 1, 2011, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman
Catholic Church and the congregation from St. Vincent de Paul Roman
Catholic Church were merged and officially renamed Blessed John Paul II
Parish; in 2014, the parish was once again renamed St. John Paul II R.C.
Church; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Hamlet of Lake View continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Hamlet of Lake View, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Julie Palmer, Chairperson, LV 150 Committee.
