COMMEMORATING the 60th Anniversary of Holiday
Valley in Ellicottville, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the proud and distinguished histories of exceptional
organizations that are a part of the community and comprise the noble
body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accordance with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The origin of Holiday Valley dates back to 1936, when G.
Wilbur "Doc" Northrup and German Ski Champion Karl Fahrner brought the
State Skiing Championships to Ellicottville; this began the development
of a ski town where, in 1957, the Ellicottville Ski Club purchased 30
acres of land and formed the Win-Sum Ski Corporation; and
WHEREAS, In January of 2018, Holiday Valley Resort celebrated 60
years of operation since the first T-bar and slope opened to the public
on January 4, 1958; since opening day, the resort has continuously made
significant improvements to become the year-round destination that it is
today; and
WHEREAS, During its first few years, additional tows and the
Tannenbaum T-bar were installed, and at the end of its first decade of
operation, the Mardi Gras double chair and School Haus T-bar were
installed; in 1962, the first nine holes of golf opened up to energize
the year-round mantra; by 1965, the first snowmaking equipment was
installed; and
WHEREAS, Many additions and improvements would be made over the
decades including significant changes in the 1980s: a clubhouse
expansion; the Morning Star Triple Chair, Mardi Gras Quad Chair and Snow
Pine Double Chair were installed; the Middle Chalet was expanded and the
Holiday Valley Rental Management Office opened; the resort purchased the
Holiday Valley Motel and opened the Holiday Valley Realty Office; the
School Haus Double Chair was installed and the Slippery Streets
Clubhouse opened; a second nine holes of golf was added in addition to
the Clubhouse being enlarged and the Tannenbaum Triple Chair opened; and
WHEREAS, In the 1990s, Holiday Valley opened various chairlifts,
including the Mardi Gras Xpress Hi Speed Quad Chair Lift; a Pool Complex
and Day Care Center opened as well as the construction of the Tannenbaum
Lodge and completion of the iconic clock tower; and
WHEREAS, Since 2000, Holiday Valley has introduced the Yodeler
Lodge, and the Holiday Valley Tubing Company opened in 2003; the
Tannenbaum Lodge was expanded and the Spruce Lake Reservoir for
snowmaking was completed in 2006; during the last decade, continued
improvements have been made in snowmaking, the opening of Sky High
Aerial Park, the Mountain Coaster, and the Holiday Valley Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Holiday Valley is a true gem that has been instrumental in
boosting tourism for the region; this historic resort will continue to
thrive and help create memories for families in the years to come; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly
recognize and honor milestones in the history of communities large and
small in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, New
York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Holiday Valley.
