Senate Resolution No. 3780

COMMENDING Alan Nahmais upon the occasion of being
named the 2018 Humanitarian of the Year by the
Cooley's Anemia Foundation
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Alan Nahmais has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Alan
Nahmais upon the occasion of being named the 2018 Humanitarian of the
Year by the Cooley's Anemia Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Alan Nahmais of Stalco Construction has been selected for
this most auspicious honor for his humanitarianism and outstanding
support on behalf of children afflicted with Cooley's anemia, and for
his years of dedication in assisting the Foundation to find a cure for
this fatal disease; and
WHEREAS, For many years, Alan Nahmais has generously contributed to
various fundraising efforts held to benefit the Cooley's Anemia
Foundation; he wholeheartedly supports the Cooley's Anemia Foundation
and its mission of alleviating challenges faced by people afflicted by
Cooley's Anemia, medically known as thalassemia, a terminal blood
disorder requiring patients to receive a blood transfusion every two to
four weeks; and
WHEREAS, Alan Nahmais grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and later moved
to Long Island; he began his distinguished professional career working
on excavation, demolition, and concrete projects in New York City; and
WHEREAS, In 1992, Alan Nahmais co-formed Stalco Construction; under
his luminous leadership, the firm has become one of the leading
commercial and institutional builders in the Northeast; recently,
Building Design & Construction magazine ranked his business as the 101st
largest general contractor and the 59th largest construction manager in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the last 26 years, Alan Nahmais and his company
have managed the construction of some of the most prominent building
projects in the country, including: the historic restoration of Pier A
in Manhattan's Battery Park; the new Elmhurst Public Library in
Elmhurst, New York, the busiest public library branch in the United
States; the expansion of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Engineering
in Queens, New York; and the new emergency department at Lincoln Medical
& Mental Health Center in the Bronx, New York, which serves nearly
200,000 patients every year; and
WHEREAS, Alan Nahmais has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A truly compassionate man, Alan Nahmais has used his good
fortune and success to co-found Contractors for Kids (CFK), a
not-for-profit corporation which strives to help children and their
families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have
impacted their lives through the sickness or injury or death of a child;
and
WHEREAS, Since its inception in 2005, CFK has raised significant
funds and has assisted more than 500 Long Island families; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his work with CFK, Alan Nahmais supports
numerous schools and libraries throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Alan Nahmais has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
occupation and community, he was recognized as the 2009 Man of the Year
by the Marty Lyons Foundation, and was named Construction Executive of
the Year by the Long Island Chapter of the Construction Financial
Management Association; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his two sons, Andrew and
Jason, both of whom have shown him love and support and rejoice in his
many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Alan Nahmais has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Alan Nahmais upon the occasion of being named the 2018
Humanitarian of the Year by the Cooley's Anemia Foundation; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Alan Nahmais.
