MOURNING the death of Mack S. Luchey, astute
businessman, music lover, and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding individuals who distinguished themselves through their
exceptional careers, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Mack S. Luchey of Buffalo, New York, died on January 26,
2018, at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, Born in McCormick, South Carolina, Mack S. Luchey and his
family moved to Buffalo when he was a baby; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Hutchinson Central High School, Mack
S. Luchey studied engineering at the University at Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, Even as a child Mack S. Luchey was always a hard worker and
always looked for ways to earn extra money, such as delivering groceries
to his neighbors and picking beans on a local farm during the summer
months; and
WHEREAS, Mack S. Luchey proudly served his country as a member of
the United States Army Reserves; he also drove a UPS delivery truck, and
worked as a bartender in his father's tavern; and
WHEREAS, During this time, Mack S. Luchey met his former wife, Doris
Banks, a clerk at Audrey and Del's record store; after they were
married, the couple opened their own record store together at 286 E.
Ferry Street; Doris Records has been recognized as the Buffalo area's
oldest record store; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, Mack S. Luchey and Doris were privileged
to have met famous performers such as Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige,
Lil' Kim, Ice Cube, and Kool Moe Dee; and
WHEREAS, Even though Mack S. Luchey and Doris divorced in 1975, they
remained good friends; Mack maintained ownership of the store, and kept
the name the same in Doris' honor; and
WHEREAS, Mack S. Luchey's commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to the community in which he lived, worked, and
played, Mack S. Luchey helped found Men Allied for the Need to
Understand Prostate Cancer (MAN UP), a prostate cancer awareness
advocacy group; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man was also instrumental in establishing
Buffalo's Juneteenth Festival and served on its board of directors; in
addition, he was a faithful member of the First Shiloh Baptist Church;
and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that we take time to celebrate the arts
of our Nation, and to express our appreciation to everyone who promotes
the arts; for his valuable contributions to the Buffalo music scene,
Mack S. Luchey was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in
2008; and
WHEREAS, Mack S. Luchey is survived by his three sons, Derrick
Luchey, Gregory Luchey, and Duane Luchey; three sisters, Willa Mae
Brittin, Thelma Taggart, and Chloe Luchey; and five grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Mack S. Luchey leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Mack S. Luchey, astute businessman, music lover, and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Mack S. Luchey.
