COMMEMORATING the 25th Anniversary of the Queens
Educational Opportunity Center on January 26, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those commemorative historical events which symbolize the growth
and development of the educational institutions which comprise the
communities of this great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Queens Educational Opportunity
Center, to be celebrated on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at York College,
Jamaica, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1991, and located in the Jamaica business
district, the Queens Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) strives to
produce lifelong learners who are self-directed, empowered, and
committed to excellence; and
WHEREAS, Students and residents of the surrounding communities are
provided a range of services designed to develop their academic,
vocational and life skills necessary to become self-sufficient
individuals; and
WHEREAS, The program and services at the Queens Educational
Opportunity Center are structured to adapt to the needs of the
community, and to serve as a readily accessible first step toward the
attainment of long-term education and vocational goals; and
WHEREAS, The QEOC is committed to forging supportive service
connections with other community organizations, and all programs are
tuition free for eligible participants; annually, the Center enrolls
more than 1,000 students and provides a host of services including
referrals, post-employment and pre-college follow-up to hundreds more;
and
WHEREAS, The Queens Educational Opportunity Center offers a variety
of programs including, Basic Education, English As a Second Language,
High School Equivalency (HSE) Preparation, HSE Assessment Project
(HSEAP), Pathways to College, Computerized Medical Billing Specialist,
Microsoft Certification Specialist, Emergency Medical Technician,
Security Guard Training, Home Health Aide, Job Readiness and Employment
Counseling; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Queens
Educational Opportunity Center may look back with pride upon its humble
beginnings, find just satisfaction in its purposeful growth and hold
true of purpose in its commitment to serving the educational needs of
the citizens of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to join with the
Queens Educational Opportunity Center in the celebration of its 25th
Anniversary, recognizing on this auspicious occasion that the quality
and dignity of life are empowered by the faithful and diligent efforts
of such noble institutions of learning; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Queens Educational Opportunity
Center on January 26, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Queens Educational Opportunity Center.
