HONORING Marla Simpson upon the occasion of being
inducted into the Strong Nonprofits for Better New
York's Women in Human Services Hall of Fame on March
13, 2018

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, Marla Simpson has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Marla
Simpson upon the occasion of being inducted into the Strong Nonprofits
for Better New York's Women in Human Services Hall of Fame on Tuesday,
March 13, 2018; and

WHEREAS, With a deep connection to the nonprofit sector which spans
four decades, Marla Simpson currently serves as President/Executive
Director of Brooklyn Community Services, one of the oldest and largest
nonsectarian, multi-service community-based providers in Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, In addition, she is an active member of both the Governor's
Not-for-Profit Government Contracting Advisory Committee and the Mayor's
Nonprofit Resiliency Committee; and

WHEREAS, Marla Simpson began her illustrious career as a legal
services attorney specializing in access to food programs; from 1999
until 2003, she served as Investigations Chief in the New York Attorney
General's Charities Bureau, where she focused on governance and
financial practices; and

WHEREAS, From 2003 to 2012, serving as New York City's Chief
Procurement Officer, Marla Simpson brought a customer service and
problem-solving orientation to the Mayor's Office of Contract Services
(MOCS), with a special focus on the needs of the City's nonprofit vendor
community; and

WHEREAS, Today, Marla Simpson is dedicated to building a strong and
effective partnership between the nonprofit sector and New York City/New
York State government, for the benefit of all New Yorkers, particularly
the people of Brooklyn, where she has lived for nearly 40 years; and

WHEREAS, The success of Brooklyn Community Services is in direct
correlation to the efforts of President/Executive Director Marla
Simpson, whose involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an
impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising
standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization
and the community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Marla Simpson has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Marla Simpson has displayed
throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Marla Simpson, that future generations may know and appreciate her
admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Marla Simpson upon the occasion of being inducted into the Strong
Nonprofits for Better New York's Women in Human Services Hall of Fame on
March 13, 2018; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Marla Simpson.
