CONGRATULATING George Shurter upon the occasion of
his induction into the SUNY Orange Colt Athletic
Hall of Fame on November 4, 2017

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate George Shurter upon the occasion of his induction into the
SUNY Orange Colt Athletic Hall of Fame; this momentous occasion was
celebrated on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Kuhl's Highland House,
Middletown, New York; and

WHEREAS, George Shurter is a 1974 graduate of SUNY Orange, where he
distinguished himself by his many notable achievements as a member of
the cross country team; and

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Orange County, George Shurter
attended Pine Bush High School where he was a powerful runner on the
cross country team; in 1971, he captured the Section IX Class C Boys
Cross Country Championship with a remarkable time of 13:03; and

WHEREAS, After graduating, George Shurter was a vital member of the
SUNY Orange cross country team during the 1972-1973 seasons; during this
time, he led his team to consecutive Region XV Championships, and was
twice named to the All-Region Team; and

WHEREAS, In 1973, George Shurter won 10 meets, including the
Mid-Hudson Conference Championship, where he completed the course in
20:31; he was also instrumental in leading the team to two top 25
finishes at the 1972 and 1973 NJCAA National meets; and

WHEREAS, Currently, George Shurter holds the title of Vice President
of the Orange County Runners Club, and has served as coach of the
Middletown High School Girls Cross Country Team for the last 11 years;
and

WHEREAS, George Shurter continues to enjoy running, and serves as
the one of the directors for the Class 10K race in Middletown and
various other races; and

WHEREAS, Athletes such as George Shurter provide a tremendous
service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
student-athletes in their athletic journeys and ensuring their success
in their future years; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor George Shurter for
his extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his
skill, dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate George Shurter upon the occasion of his induction into the
SUNY Orange Colt Athletic Hall of Fame on November 4, 2017; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to George Shurter.
