COMMENDING Isma Chaudhry upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the National
Action Network, West Nassau Chapter on March 17,
2018
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Isma
Chaudhry upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
the National Action Network, West Nassau Chapter to be celebrated at its
5th Annual Prestigious Women's Gala Awards on Saturday, March 17, 2018,
at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme is "Destined for Greatness"; Isma
Chaudhry truly exemplifies this theme for her demonstrated exemplary
work, services, and commitment to the people of her community; and
WHEREAS, A physician by profession, Isma Chaudhry is an interfaith
advocate and a champion for the rights of Muslim women; she has been
actively involved with the Islamic Center of Long Island for over 20
years, and in 2015 was elected the Center's first female president; and
WHEREAS, During her more than three decades of volunteering, Isma
Chaudhry's interests have focused on youth development programs,
building bridges, celebrating ethnic diversity, and interfaith
initiatives; she is a champion for women's rights and dedicated to
empowering women by creating programs that enhance academics and develop
practical skills; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Manhasset and mother of two, Isma Chaudhry
has been in the forefront supporting interfaith initiatives by
frequently presenting lectures and dispelling myths about Islam,
Islamophobia and building bridges of mutual respect, understanding and
moving beyond just tolerance; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her advocacy, she has extensive public
appearances and speaking engagements to her credit, including the United
Nations conference on Islam phobia, United States Institute of Peace,
United Nations office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to
protect, and the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers; and
WHEREAS, She is co-chair of the Board of Trustees for Long Island
WINS, an immigration advocacy organization, a member of the Nassau
County Anti-Bias Task Force, a member of the Board of Trustees of the
Interfaith Alliance of Long Island, and an advisor to the Nassau County
Council for Asian Affairs; and
WHEREAS, Isma Chaudhry has been inducted in the North Hempstead 23
Annual Women's Roll of Honor list, 2016, and "Make a Difference Award"
Town of Hempstead 2017; she has been honored by the National Center for
Suburban studies, Hofstra University 2017, and by CARECEN for her work
in building bridges of understanding and respect in an ethnically
diverse world; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Isma Chaudhry has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Isma Chaudhry upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the National Action Network, West Nassau Chapter on March
17, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Isma Chaudhry.
