HONORING Lewis Henry Mueller posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Lewis Henry
Mueller posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be presented at the Columbia County
Honor-A-Deceased-Veteran Ceremony on Monday, March 26, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 23, 1924, to William and Mae (Helsey)
Mueller in Germantown, New York, Lewis Henry Mueller attended Hudson
High School; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Henry Mueller worked for Stottville Mills as a Garnet
machine operator before enlisting in the United States Navy on January
12, 1943; after basic training at Sampson, New York, he received
training as a gunners mate at Newport, Rhode Island; and
WHEREAS, On December 1, 1943, 1st Class Petty Officer Gunners Mate
Lewis Henry Mueller reported aboard the USS LST 273, and on April 11,
1944, he was assigned to the USS LC (L) 1069 and attended AA Gunnery
School; and
WHEREAS, This brave sailor actively served during the assault and
occupation of Okinawa and Japan; he was honorably discharged at Lido
Beach, Long Island on November 26, 1946; and
WHEREAS, For his courageous service during World War II, Lewis Henry
Mueller was awarded the American Theater of War and the Asiatic Pacific
Campaign Ribbon with two bronze stars; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his military service, Lewis
Henry Mueller married Hilda Ogden on March 29, 1947, and together they
raised four children; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Henry Mueller was the owner and operator of Mueller's
Grocery and the MGM Market; he also worked for the New York State
Assembly for 30 years, retiring as foreman of the printing department in
1979; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, Lewis Henry Mueller was a member
of the Federation of Polish Sportsmen, American Legion Post No. 184, VFW
Post No. 1314, and H.W. Rogers Hose Company No. 2; and
WHEREAS, A communicant of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Lewis Henry
Mueller died on July 21, 2017, at the age of 92; he will always be
remembered as a kind and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and
great-grandfather, who was committed to helping people and his
community; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Henry Mueller is survived by his wife, Hilda; four
children, Gail, Carol, Alan and Colleen; seven grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Lewis Henry Mueller demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Lewis Henry Mueller posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Lewis Henry Mueller.
